Packing for a motorbike trip across Mongolia is a constant balance between being prepared and keeping things simple. You’ll ride through remote areas, deal with changing weather, and often camp in the wild. At the same time, every extra kilo makes the bike harder to handle.

The Essentials
There are a few items I packed when travelling across Mongolia by motorbike.
Riding Gear
- Helmet
- Gloves
- Protective jacket
- Sturdy boots or strong shoes
- Rain layer
- Warm mid-layer for cold evenings
Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly after sunset, and strong wind on the steppe can make long riding days exhausting.
Navigation and Communication
- Offline navigation app
- Power bank
- Charging cables
- Paper map as backup
Mobile signal is often limited outside towns, so relying on offline navigation is important.
Camping Equipment
- Lightweight tent
- Sleeping bag suitable for cold nights
- Sleeping mat
- Cooking setup
- Headlamp or torch
Wild camping is one of the best things about Mongolia.

Tools and Mechanical Basics
- Spare inner tube
- Basic toolkit
- Tire levers
- Pump
- Chain lubricant
Small mechanical issues are part of riding in remote terrain. Being able to solve simple problems yourself can save a lot of time.
The Value of Minimalism
Trying pack only what you need not only saves a lot of space it improves riding comfort and safety.
A lighter bike is:
- easier to control
- easier to lift after a fall
- less tiring over long distances
- more stable in sand or mud
Packing only what you truly need allows you to move more freely and enjoy the journey rather than constantly worrying about your gear.
